About SBF
SBF Objectives
To unify all Buddhist institutions and Buddhists in Singapore.
To observe Buddhist precepts, to practise Buddhism and to propagate Dharma.
To promote culture, education and social welfare.
Singapore Buddhist Federation(SBF) was initiated and formed by the chinese community of Buddhist in 1948.It is the parent body of Singapore Buddhist organisations and followers.It consist of the following components:
The Singapore Buddhist Federation Foundation was set up in the late 1990s. It was renamed as the Singapore Buddhist Community Foundation on 24 June 2005 to reflect more appropriately its objective to serve the community. It aims to bring relief to those suffering in the following areas:
- Extending assistance to victims of disasters (e.g. floods, famines, pandemics and wars).
- Offering help to individuals and their family members who are unable to work due to old age, sickness or accidents.
- Awarding bursaries to students from primary to tertiary levels.
- Supporting organisations that share similar objectives as the Foundation (e.g. hospitals, educational institutions, refugee camps, orphanages).
- Sponsoring educational, cultural and religious organisations.
Managed by the 9th Term’s Management Council, the main sources of income for the Foundation are membership subscription fees and donations from members and the public. Presently, a new member pays $100 as membership entrance fee. The annual membership fee is also $100.
Registered under the Societies Act on 13 Jun 1990,ROS181/89 REL.
It is also a registered Charity, Charity ref:01009
Charities and Welfare Works
The foundation has since contributed extensively to educational and charitable work, some of which include:
- Participation in relief works, e.g. South Asia Tidal waves,Taiwan earthquakes, Indonesia earthquakes, Lebanon War, Turkey earthquakes etc
- Organization of counselling, Dharma lessons and Refuge-taking ceremonies for inmates of prisons, drug rehabilitation centres and SAF Detention Barracks.
- Conduct vegetarian culinary lessons for inmates of various penal institutions.
- Provision of Courage Fund to both SARS victims and healthcare workers.
Cultural and Educational Activities
- Publication of quaterly‘Nanyang Buddhist’ Journal
- Series of talks on Buddhist Culture and Literature
- Co-organise educational seminar on Buddhism with local and overseas institutions.
- Members of SBF organised concerts to promote Buddhist Music, and to raise funds for cultural organisation, school, and clinic building.

Affiliates of SBF
Maha Bodhi School
A Government-aided primary school founded by SBF in 1948. Accorded SAP School status in 1990, it currently has 2200 pupils.
Awarded Programme for School-Based Excellence Award” in 2006.
Moved to a holding school in Macpherson area by the end -2006 as the current campus will undergo a 2 year massive upgrading project.The estimated cost is $21 million with $14 million grant from MOE and SBF to bear $9 million.
Manjusri Secondary School
A government-aided secondary school founded by SBF in 1982, it currently has more than 1000 students.
The school will be relocated next to Maha Bodhi School. Construction works for the new campus starts at the end of 2006. The estimated cost is $26 million.
Prince Siddhartha Child Care Centre
Located at Bukit Batok and established in 1993, it and has an enrolment of about 90 children and is an execution arm of SBF’s social programmes.
Marine Parade Maha Bodhi Student Care Centre
A joint project between SBF and Southeast CDC, it was launched in 1999 with an enrolment of about 100.
SBF Youth Group
Formed in 1991 for the promotion solidarity among Buddhist Youth and to promote Buddhism.It has more than 120 members
SBF Dharma Class Student’s Society
Formed in 1994 by alumus and students of SBF Dharma classes.It aims to enhance the learning of the Dharma and to support SBF.It has more than 300 members.
SBF Scouts
Lauched in 2007, the SBF scout movement aim to build up leadership and team spirit among the young Buddhists.
